The Amalfi Coast

There is a particular quality to the light on the Amalfi Coast in the late afternoon — gold, and a little forgiving, the way it slides down the cliffs and settles on the water. It is the light we think about all winter. The light we try, in our own quiet way, to design for.

The coast unspools for some fifty kilometres along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, a ribbon of pastel villages stitched into near-vertical rock. Positano tumbles toward the sea in shades of apricot and faded rose. Ravello sits higher and cooler, its gardens looking out over a horizon that seems to go on without end. Between them, lemon groves terrace the hillsides, heavy and fragrant, the fruit the size of a fist.

The pleasure of doing very little

What we love about this stretch of Italy is not the spectacle of it — though it is beautiful — but the pace. Mornings are for espresso taken standing at the bar. Afternoons dissolve into long lunches under a canopy of vines, plates of pasta al limone arriving without ceremony. There is swimming, and then there is drying off in the sun, and these are considered activities in their own right.

On the Amalfi Coast, elegance is never trying. It simply is.

What to pack, what to leave

Bring less than you think. A few pieces in natural fabrics, a good pair of sandals worn soft, and one bag that holds a little of everything. Leave the schedule at home. The coast has its own rhythm, and the trick — the real luxury — is letting it set the tempo for you.
